How to increase the love hormone in a few simple steps

A beautiful sunset

The love hormone “oxytocin” is a hormone that helps strengthen bonds with our loved ones. The love hormone is produced naturally in the hypothalamus, where the pituitary gland releases it into the bloodstream. Its main function is to facilitate childbirth, since oxytocin stimulates the muscles of the uterus to contract, promotes the production of prostaglandins and also increases uterine contractions.

Sometimes women with slow labor are given oxytocin to speed up labor. Once the baby is born, oxytocin helps move milk from the breast ducts to the nipple, strengthening the bond between the mother and the baby. Our body also produces oxytocin when we are passionate about a partner and when we fall in love, which is why it is called the “love hormone”.

1-Exercise One promising way to boost oxytocin naturally is through exercise. One study noted an increase in oxytocin levels measured in participants’ saliva after high-intensity martial arts training.

2-Yoga Practicing yoga has many benefits, including controlling anxiety and stress, relieving depression, and getting better quality sleep, in addition to improving quality of life, and research has shown that yoga can also help increase oxytocin production. A small study aims to find out if yoga can help increase the hormone oxytocin in people with schizophrenia, a mental health condition that often involves difficulty recognizing facial emotions and other social difficulties. According to the study results, the 15 participants who practiced yoga for a month experienced improvements in their ability to recognize emotions and social and occupational performance, and they also had higher levels of oxytocin.

3-Listening to music Although musical tastes can vary greatly from person to person, most people enjoy listening to all types of music. Music helps improve mood, focus, and motivation, and helps improve the ability to socialize, an effect also associated with oxytocin. Research is still limited, but some small studies have found evidence that music can help increase oxytocin levels in your body. According to a 2009 study, 20 open-heart surgery patients who listened to music at rest had higher oxytocin levels and felt more relaxed than patients who did not listen to music. In a 2003 study of 16 singers, all participants had increased levels of oxytocin after a singing lesson, and study participants also reported feeling more energized and relaxed.

4-Massage A 2012 study of 95 adults found evidence that 15 minutes of massage can not only help people relax, but also increase levels of love hormones. Research from 2015 supports and expands on this finding, noting that oxytocin levels also increase in the person receiving the massage, not just the person receiving it. People often report less pain, stress and anxiety after the massage, and many also notice an improvement in mood and a greater sense of well-being.

5- Tell someone how much you care about them. Sharing your love and affection with people who mean a lot to you can help increase oxytocin in several ways. Sharing your feelings with a family member often leads to reciprocity, and telling your girlfriend or husband that you love him can lead to a hug. Or a hand hug or a kiss. a how much you like him can increase positive social feelings on both sides.

6-Meditation Practicing meditation daily can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and help you feel more compassionate towards yourself and others, and these effects can go a long way towards increasing your sense of connection and strengthen your relationships with others. Meditation also helps produce oxytocin by focusing your meditation on someone you care about, including loving kindness meditation.

7- Cook and eat with someone you love. Sharing food is a great way to connect. Preparing a meal with friends or a partner can provide pleasure in addition to food. You’re not only sharing the meal, but you’re also spending time with the people you love, and remember eating itself can produce pleasure, which helps stimulate the release of oxytocin.
