Ready-made pâté is one of the snacks that many prefer to eat at work, school or university, not realizing that it can cause health complications for the body.
Dr Sherine Ali Zaki, head of the food safety and field monitoring committee at the General Union of Veterinarians, warned against consuming ready-to-use packaged pâté, especially after a member of the awareness group ” Get in the Bite” on Facebook wrote a post for her: “I bought a pate sandwich with cheese.” Istanbul, I opened it and split it into two halves, and remembered that the white is cheesy and melted from the heat. I came to eat and found its taste very bitter, like an antibiotic.
The head of the food safety committee explained that the coated pâté is added to a substance called “calcium propionate”, which is an antiseptic substance, and the bitter taste which resembles an antibiotic indicates “Penicillium fungus mold”, which means that the pâté has been subjected to poor transport and storage conditions.
It also mentioned that two groups of children received a diet containing preservatives, including calcium propionate, and the other group received a diet without preservatives.
While these symptoms disappeared in the group that did not take this substance.
What is Calcium Propionate?
It is a natural organic salt formed by a reaction between calcium hydroxide and propionic acid.
It acts as a preservative for many foods, especially baked goods, to help extend shelf life by interfering with the growth and reproduction of microorganisms.
Calcium propionate has been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, according to Healthline.
– Is it safe to eat?
Calcium propionate was studied extensively by the FDA before being classified as “generally recognized as safe for consumption”.
An animal study showed that feeding rats 1-3 grams of calcium propionate daily for 4-5 weeks had no effect on growth.
Most lab studies on consumption and toxicity of calcium propionate have been negative, except for a few that have used exceptionally high amounts.
For example, researchers injected large amounts of calcium propionate into the yolk sacs of chicken embryos, resulting in deformities.
Possible disadvantages:
In general, calcium propionate is safe to consume with few side effects.
In rare cases, it causes side effects, such as headaches and migraines.
A human study has linked taking propionate to increased production of insulin and glucagon, a hormone that stimulates the release of glucose (sugar). This can lead to insulin resistance, a condition in which your body cannot use insulin properly, leading to type 2 diabetes.
In addition, irritability, insomnia, lack of attention and sleep problems after eating bread containing calcium propionate daily.
Non-hazardous state
Dr. Marwa Shair, a nutrition expert and researcher at the Food Technology Research Institute, said in statements exclusive to “Masrawy” that the pâté, which is sold in stores, has a small percentage of “propionate” added to it during its manufacture. of calcium”, which is a soluble preservative to preserve it as long as possible and to prevent mold and fungus from multiplying inside, and it is not dangerous if consumed in specific quantities.
However, it is necessary that it be in specific proportions allowed by relevant authorities and supervision, so that it does not pose a threat to human health.
He mentioned that if used in large amounts, it makes baked goods more bitter, in addition to long-term excessive consumption, resulting in:
– Digestive problems and stomach disorders.
Harmful to liver health.
Cancer.
Disorders of body membranes.
Prevention methods:
1. It is recommended to reduce the consumption of pâté as much as possible, in order to avoid the appearance of health complications.
2. Replace the pâté with healthy foods necessary for a healthy body.
3. Be sure to prepare fresh food at home and eat more fruit.
4. It is recommended to eat fresh juices rather than canned ones.
